Where can I find information on how to fully edit an excel sheet using MATLAB?

I am trying to write for the first time an automated excel sheet report using MATLAB. I know that I could use xlswrite to export the data from MATLAB to an excel file, however I want to be able to fully edit the excel sheet. I have noticed that a lot people are using Excel = actxserver('Excel.Application'); in order to merge cells, change background cell colors, etc. Is there any website or good source of information that contains detail description about all the available options to edit an excel sheet after calling actxserver? Or do I have to know VBA in order to have a good grasp about the actxserver?
