Why does my MALTAB installation no longer open after attempting to install an update?

The current workaround to this issue is to reinstall the update by running the update_installer from the following directory:
$MATLABROOT\bin\<platform>
If this does not resolve the issue, please regenerate MATLAB preferences as specified in the following post:
https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/99625-how-do-i-regenerate-my-matlab-preferences
