Single object in legend of plot and patch or fill

I would like to create a legend for a figure that displays a line and the errorbars or a patch in a single legend object (i.e. where the line overlays the errorbars or patch in the legend). I've tried using hggroup but I'm under the impression that only works for a plot that has multiple lines.
An example of the legend I'm looking for can be found in Figure 5 of:
Church, J.A., and White, N.J., 2011. Sea-level rise from the late 19th to the early 21st century. Surveys in Geophysics, 32: 585-602.

I suggest to post a picture of the example. I'm not going to search in this paper until I've found, what you probably want.
