Can I detect the time that the ambient sound exceeds a previously set limit

I would like to use my Laptop microphone and set a limit for ambient sound. Then I would like to find the exact time for the first time that the level exceeds the limit. Like detection of the time that something drops on and touches the surface.

I suggest you post another question, for example, on connecting a microphone to MATLAB, if that's what you are stuck on.

I thought this would be a simple process and there would be an already written codes out there which I couldn't find.
