Model Cables and Lines in Simscape

The Simscape™ Electrical™ libraries include many blocks that model cables and lines with varying degrees of complexity. Low-fidelity models focus on the essential dynamics of your system, enabling faster simulation and simpler parameterization, while high-fidelity models provide more detailed results. To increase simulation speed and simplify the design process, choose a block with only as much detail as you need to answer your engineering design questions.

The level of detail you need depends on your simulation goals, the physical length of the cable or line, and the frequency range of the signal. Blocks make different modeling assumptions that can be useful to simplify calculations, depending on whether you are analyzing timing, power flow, system-level interactions, or electromagnetic behavior.

This two-part tutorial shows how to select a block for your application:

  1. Choose Mathematical Models that Represent Cables or Lines — Select the mathematical model that is best suited to your application from a variety of different types of delay-based, lumped-parameter, and distributed models.

  2. Choose Blocks to Model Cables or Lines — Select a block that models a cable or line with your conductor arrangement using the mathematical model you have chosen. Other factors, like how you want to parameterize the block and whether the block supports fault modeling, can also impact your block choice. You learn about these differences between blocks and select the most suitable block for a range of DC and AC applications.
